But for many decades, the NFL and other leagues opposed having sport franchises in Las Vegas, most likely due to the city’s deeply rooted gambling industry. “Vegas fans tend to be sports fans, too, and sports have helped us expand the customer base that are willing to consider Las Vegas,” Hill said. And during the past two years, Las Vegas and other tourist-centric cities have benefitted from consumers’ post-pandemic splurges on experiences and travel versus goods. It’s been hard to escape the feeling this summer that, after years of warnings, climate change is starting to make itself felt in everyday life: Floods, wildfires and deadly heat waves have all made headlines for months, and it looks as if July will be the hottest month ever recorded. In that sense Jeff Goodell’s book “The Heat Will Kill You First” — about the real-world costs and consequences of a warming planet — feels particularly urgent at the moment. On this week’s podcast, Goodell talks with Gilbert Cruz about air conditioning, urban heat traps and the effects of extreme heat on the human body, among other things. “I’ve been working on this book for four years,” Goodell says, “and for it to be out now. It sometimes feels like I’m living in my own Stephen King novel.

CNN —The Washington Commanders will have a new ownership group as the team’s previous owner faces a $60 million fine from the league following an independent investigation finding workplace misconduct and financial improprieties. The Commanders’ new ownership group includes Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and billionaire Mitch Rales, Harris’ longtime sports business partner. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell congratulated Harris and his partners after the unanimous vote. Johnston told a congressional committee that the Commanders owner had put his hand on her leg under the table at a work dinner and tried to persuade her to get into his limousine. “The conduct substantiated in Ms. White’s findings has no place in the NFL,” a statement from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated.

THE HEAT WILL KILL YOU FIRST: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet, by Jeff GoodellHeat, according to the journalist Jeff Goodell, has a branding problem — though unlike the desperate politician whose P.R. flack is on speed dial, heat doesn’t need to be better liked; it isn’t loathed nearly enough. As this terrifying book makes exceptionally clear, thinking we can just crank up the A.C. is a dangerous way to live. This is a propulsive book, one to be raced through; the planet is burning, and we are running out of time. “When it gets too hot, things die,” an agricultural ecologist tells Goodell.

The postponed Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game will not be made up following the terrifying collapse of safety Damar Hamlin, the league said Thursday. Now at 12-3, Buffalo trails 13-3 Kansas City for the AFC’s top spot, which carries a first-round playoff bye. If Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties, Buffalo vs. Kansas City would be at a neutral site.
